With Pesach behind us, our next big holiday is Shavuot, always 50 days after the start of Pesach. But the calendar tells us that before Shavuot comes the relatively new observances of Yom Ha-Shoah (Holocaust Rememberance Day) and Yom Ha-Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day). For the younger students we’ll skip reading about the Holocaust (though we do have quite a few picture books on the subject) and for the next 2 weeks read books on Israel, which tend to be both informative and fun. For the older students, we’ll get to Zionism and Israel, but for this week, we’ll focus on texts that will help to contextualize the painful road to the Holocaust.
