Sukkat Shalom Lesson 1 Home Learning

Activity instructions for PreK-3

There is a link to this video in the Seesaw Class App. The only help students will need is with the iron that is used to iron on the transfers. There are two transfers for each student. They can iron one onto their bag and decorate it as well. If your student needs help with anything other than ironing, encourage them to drop in to the Lower El Zoom classroom between 4:30-6:30 M-Th.

Everything in the activity bag is sorted by weeks 1-5. Please make sure your students keep everything together in their bag so that supplies will be reused throughout the year. A new activity bag will be provided before each 5-week module.

Challenge instructions for grades 4-7

The written challenge instructions are in your student’s blue folder. If your student needs help, encourage them to drop in to the Lower El Zoom classroom between 4:30-6:30 M-Th.

Family Schmooze

The Family Schmooze document for Week 1 is in your student’s blue folder. Enjoy the learning together.

Sukkat Shalom

This week we begin the first of five 5-week Judaism modules. In this first module, we will be teaching the Jewish value of סֻכַּת†שָׁלוֹם Sukkat Shalom and the Caregiving Principle of Creating a Feeling of Safety.

The Hebrew phrase, סכֻּתַ†שָׁלוֹם (sukkat shalom), means “shelter of peace,” a place that generates the feeling of safety and protection. It is part of the Hashkiveinu blessing in the evening service, in which we request that God:

וּפְרוֹשׂ†עָלֵינוּ†סֻכַּת†שְׁלוֹמֶ

U’fros aleinu sukkat sh’lomecha.

“Spread over us Your shelter of peace.”

PreK-7 There’s Still More Learning this Week

Our new learning model has four components. Our children did the teacher-led group learning on Sunday. Many students have completed or started some of the other components. If they haven’t already, please make sure your student participates in the other three:

  1. Attend at least one weekday drop-in session each week. See Drop In Schedule. They are welcome to come everyday. We are happy to keep your students occupied so that you can get some work done!
  2. Complete home learning activities posted in Seesaw.
  3. Schedule 1:1 Hebrew lessons. Go here to schedule and see Zoom links for Hebrew 1:1.

For security, 1:1 Hebrew documents require a Gmail account. If you did not include a Gmail account on the online registration form, please send Nora your Gmail address to get access. If you don’t have a Gmail account, email Nora to schedule.

If you did not schedule before Wednesday, lessons will start next week.

No school this Sunday. It’s Rosh Hashanah 2.

PreK-7: Weekday schedule; Sign up for Hebrew 1:1

Students don’t need to sign up for Seesaw, just family

Sign up for Hebrew 1:1

PreK-7 students will have Hebrew 1:1 each week of school. Select a time slot for your student on the linked schedule and type their name next to it. This is a Google Doc and anyone with the link should have editing privileges.

You can find out who your student’s teacher is by signing into Seesaw.

Rabbi Schicker’s students whose parents are members of CoM should sign up with Rabbi Spivak.

Weekday Schedule

Teachers will be available Monday through Thursday from 4:30-6:30 to help with the weekly Activities and Challenge projects. Students can drop in any time to hang out and have fun with their teachers and friends or attend any other offerings that are scheduled. Here is the current weekday schedule. The schedule will be a work in progress until we find out what works for families. We welcome your feedback.

What happens this Sunday?

Contact Nora by phone (269) 373-4138 after the end of Shabbat (8:38pm Saturday) if you don’t have your Zoom login card.

** May run until 12:15 for 4th and 5th grades.

Zoom Rooms

Every Sunday PreK-7 will start in the Lower El Classroom.  HS will start in the HS classroom.

Zoom login cards are in the back of the left side of your PreK-7 student’s folder. HS students login cards will be in their younger sibling’s folder. (If they have no sibling in the lower grades, their code should arrive by mail on Saturday.)

The cards have a QR code to the Zoom classrooms they will use.  The cards also have a short url printed on them that can be entered into devices that don’t have a QR reader.  The password for the Zoom meeting is included in the QR code and in the short url.

HS students have a card for all three rooms.  Upper El has cards for Upper El and Lower El.  Lower El students have only one Zoom login card.

PreK-7 will use the Lower El Classroom on Monday-Thursday afternoons.

We will start on time. Make sure your student(s) are online and ready to begin learning on time.

11:15-11:30 Help us get the student’s device and room set up for Hebrew Through Movement.

PreK-1
Parents will need to be close at hand, especially in the beginning of the year. You can choose to sit on the sidelines and be available if needed or participate actively in the lesson. Your choice. Teacher led instruction time will be brief, however, due to little one’s attention spans on Zoom.
Make sure that you are available to actively participate from 11:15-11:30 when we will be getting the student’s device and room set up for Hebrew Through Movement.

What do I need to do to get ready for school Sunday?

High School Parents

Make sure your student has login information for Zoom and the SeeSaw app. If your high schooler has a sibling in PreK-7, their login forms will be in their sibling’s folder. Otherwise it will come to them in the mail. For Sunday, the only apps high schoolers will need is Zoom and a QR reader of your choice to scan the Zoom login code. Remember this login information is like a password. Keep it safe.

PreK-7 Parents

  1. Pick up your student(s)’ bag (PreK-3) and/or folder (4-7) at CoM. Last day for pickup is today (Friday) between 8-2. Contact Nora if you need to arrange a different time.
  2. Open the blue folder and put the color schedule grid on your fridge or wherever you put those sorts of things.
  3. Locate the pages with login information for Zoom, SeeSaw and JiTap (PreK-3 only). You will find these in the back of the left hand side of the folder.
  4. Install the Seesaw Class app and a QR reader of your choice (for the Zoom login code) on your student’s device. Install the Seesaw Family app on your device. No need to install the JiTap application at this time. See instructions below:

Install the Seesaw Class App

  1. Students go to https://app.seesaw.me on a computer or install the Seesaw Class App on an iOS or Android device.
  2. Students tab “I’m a Student”.
  3. Students scan their code using Seesaw’s build-in QR code reader or type in their text code to access their Seesaw account.
  4. Remember this code is like a password. Keep it safe.

Install the Seesaw Family App

  1. Family members go to https://app.seesaw.me on a computer or install the Seesaw Family App on an iOS or Android device.
  2. If you do not have an account, click create and account, scan the QR code and follow the prompts
  3. If you already have an account, sign in, click on your profile icon and chose add new child.
