The competition area will be laid out with different colored guide markers that lead to the general area where the Afikomen is hidden. Each team will be assigned a unique guide color to follow. First team to find the Afikomen wins. All guide markers must be collected and returned as proof that your team followed the course without taking any shortcuts. The course length will be in the neighborhood of 1/4 mile.

PreK-7 La-bri’ut Lesson (Judaism)

In K’hillah Lesson 3, students continue their study of K’hillah (community). They consider, “What is my responsibility to the k’hillah? card; postage stamp; sheet with the Shabbat blessings

Library this Week

This coming Saturday is Shabbat HaChodesh, announcing the new month of Nisan (and reminding us that Pesach is not far behind). But why a special Shabbat about one of the Jewish months…now? Because even though we celebrate Rosh Hashanah as the Jewish new year, the biblical new year is Nisan, called the 1st month, the beginning of spring (aviv).

For the younger students, we will read books exploring the quirks of the Jewish calendar, as well as that special holiday traditionally celebrated by women — Rosh Chodesh, i.e. the 1st of the month — and how it relates to Aviv, the 1st month of the year.

Also this week, the haftarah is from the book of Ezekiel, so the older students will explore one of the weirdest and most “out there” prophets in the entire Tanach!

Library this Week

Ready, set, GO! Purim is in just a few days, so it’s full speed ahead. Last week for Library, the younger students heard all about the origin of Purim, i.e. the Scroll of Esther. Now they will learn all about the holiday itself and how differently it can be enjoyed depending on who you are and where you are.

As for the older students, last week they learned about Shabbat Zachor, in which we are urged to remember the Jews’ eternal enemy Amalek (Haman being a descendent). This week, we will dive deep into Megillat Ester itself — its origins, its place within Tanach, and its influence on Jews throughout history (it’s not what you think).

Community Purim Celebration Today

Celebrate Purim Online with Us!

Sunday, February 21 on Zoom from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Raise your voice, make some noise and strut your stuff!

Join in the noise and fun on Sunday, February 21 from 2:00-3:00 pm for a community Purim celebration with Temple B’nai Israel and the rest of our Jewish community.

Costume Parade

Get your costume put together and plan to be in our virtual costume parade. You submit a 15-20 second video or photo of yourself in costume and send it to us. We’ll include it in our virtual costume parade to be shown at the event. In order to be included in the video, your costume video must be submitted by February 15.

Mask Making Competition

Make a mask of any kind, or simply draw or paint one. You can enter the contest in one of three categories: under 6 years, 7-12 years and 13 and up. Everyone who makes a mask will have a chance to show it and participants will choose their favorites during the event.

Fulfilling a Mitzvot of Purim

Lastly, to fulfill the mitzvot of helping others, we’ll be collecting food donations in boxes at both CoM and TBI. As an alternative, you can make monetary donations to either (or both) Loaves and Fishes or Portage Community Center. Collections of non-food items such as soaps, shampoo, laundry detergent, diapers etc. are also welcomed and needed.

Guest Stars

Adam Weiner will be joining as once again as our Master of Ceremonies for the event, and singer extraordinaire Naomi Morse will lead us in fun Purim songs!

We hope that you will join us for a fun afternoon as we celebrate the silliest holiday in the Jewish calendar. For more information and to register for the Zoom link, click here.

Library this Week

Before there was the holiday of “Purim”, there was Megilat Ester (the Scroll of Esther) and that’s what we’re going to focus on today with the younger students. Esther was a hero for her people when few women were even given names in the Tanach — what better way to link our school’s current curriculum of “g’vurah” (power and strength for good) than to highlight the amazing story of Esther!

For the older students, we’ll also discuss Purim, but from quite a different angle. Next Saturday is Shabbat Zachor, meaning Shabbat of remembrance — but what are we supposed to remember…or, to never forget? It’s not what you think.

Have you completed the La-bri’ut survey?

Please take 8 minutes to respond to an anonymous survey that asks questions about your children’s (and your) experience with the Labri’ut curriculum we are using this year for Judaism. We want to know what kinds of Jewish learning experiences you seek moving forward.

To take the survey, please visit:https://rosov.co/Labriut
